The BTR-T was the result of the constant ambushes in chechnya. The battles in chechnya led to the requirment of a heavily armoured well armed urban combat vehicle.

The BTR-T was created to solve the problem with bringing the power and armor of a tank into a tight urban enviroment.

It is based on a T-55 chasis with ERA pannels and a remote turret mainly mounting either a 2A42 30mm cannon or an AGS-17 grenade launcher. Although there are a variety of configurations this vehicle design may lead to the conversion of many of Russia's unused T-54/55.
